Tax Credit

No Texas State Income Tax Credit

Texas has no state income tax and therefore offers no state-level solar income tax credit. Residents cannot claim a state tax credit for solar installations.

Texas is one of nine states with no personal income tax, which means there is no mechanism for a state solar tax credit. Unlike states such as New York or Arizona, Texas homeowners cannot reduce their state tax liability through solar installation. However, Texas offers meaningful property tax and sales tax exemptions, and several utilities provide rebates. The absence of a state credit is partly offset by the state's high solar irradiance and competitive installer market.

Texas Solar Property Tax Exemption

100% exemption of the added assessed home value attributable to a solar energy device. The full increase in property value from the solar installation is excluded from property taxes.

Texas Tax Code Section 11.27 provides a full exemption for the added value of solar and wind-powered energy devices. For a system that adds $20,000 to home value at a 2.5% property tax rate, this saves $500/year. The exemption must be claimed annually with the county appraisal district using Form 50-128. Battery storage systems that work in conjunction with solar may also qualify. This is a permanent benefit with no expiration currently scheduled.

Federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (ITC) — EXPIRED

This credit has expired for new residential solar installations. It was worth 30% of the total system cost with no cap.

The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit expired for new installations as of January 1, 2026. Texas homeowners who installed solar on or before December 31, 2025 may still claim the credit on their applicable return. New installations in 2026 and beyond are not eligible. Texas businesses installing commercial solar may still claim the Commercial ITC at 30%.
