Why cycle life matters more than you think

A cycle is one full charge + discharge. If you cycle your battery once daily — common with solar — a 4,000-cycle LFP battery lasts ~11 years. A 2,500-cycle NMC battery lasts ~7 years. Over a 25-year solar system life, you're replacing an NMC battery more often.

Safety: LFP is structurally safer

LFP chemistry doesn't undergo thermal runaway — the chain reaction that causes NMC cells to catch fire when damaged or overheated. For a device installed in your garage or basement, this is a meaningful difference. NMC is not unsafe in normal use, but LFP has a fundamentally better safety floor.

NMC's advantage: energy density

For the same kWh of storage, NMC batteries are physically smaller and lighter. If space is a serious constraint — a small utility closet, or a van or boat installation — NMC's density advantage is real. For most homes, LFP's larger footprint isn't a practical problem.

The verdict for most US homeowners

For most residential solar installs: choose LFP.

Longer cycle life, better safety, and full depth of discharge make LFP the better long-term investment for homes where space isn't critically constrained. The industry is trending this direction — Tesla's latest Powerwall and LG's latest batteries use or are transitioning toward LFP.
